Frustrated

Mon Jun 9, 2008, 7:29 AM
I don't know if anyone else has this problem translating things to paper. I have the most amazing images, ideas, dreams in my head that I want to recreate but I just cannot seem to get them on paper. I think my drawing skills fail me. Its really frustrating that I can't seem to draw what's in my head, it just doesn't come out how I want it. I don't know if anyone has any kind of tips to help me with this but I would be most grateful.

Hi Anneliese,

I have this all the time and it drives me mad. If I find out how to get round it I'll let you know..

This is an issue I think most artists encounter to some degree... Most of my drawings don't really come out how I envision them, but I've been able to get to the point where I'm ok with that and can make the most with what I do draw...
Where in the process do you get stuck?

Probably straight away. I start sketching and if it doesn't look how I want I get annoyed at myself and then give up on it and move onto somthing else. I don't seem to be able to do trial and error I want it perfect straight away!

Hmm, patience is a difficult trait to learn.
What I do when something doesn't look "right" is try to find a picture thats similar to what I'm trying to fix, to give me an idea of what's "wrong" with it. I can't say I really do trial and error either, but it depends on the medium. Pencil is a lot more forgiving than pen... With pen, I've had to change my ideas for a piece many times because of things not looking the way I intended. I guess my best advice is try not to worry as much about getting things exactly as you want them, and go with what the drawing itself "wants". They do tend to get a mind of their own....

Good luck! :)

At least you have ideas in your head, that's a good start, but that you already know :)

To translate an Idea into something visible to others is a process that involves a lot of work and patience. Artists have been seeking for the right ways for centuries and many of them have spent a lifetime to get to the results they were looking for... alright, you would like to get there a bit faster. If you like, maybe I can give you a hand ;)
Have you had any training in drawing or painting in the past?
What would be your media of choice?
